The Shaolin Temple is located in Henan, the province considered the cradle of Chinese civilization due to its location on the Yellow River. During this weekend trip, learn about its rich historic heritage and enjoy a fun filled adventurous weekend visiting the birthplace of Shaolin Kungfu. Take in the scenery and get a sense of history as you learn and observe kung fu in the midst of ancient pagodas.

After lunch, visit the Grand Xiangguo Monastery in Kaifeng. This famous Buddhist temple complex was built in the 6th year of Tianbao of the northern Jin Dynasty. During the northern Song period, Xiangguo Monastery was the center of Buddhism in China. Take in the peacefulness as you gaze up at the glittering the temple’s famous One-Thousand-Hand Buddha.

Marvel at the beauty of Qingming Shanghe Gardens. This garden was developed based on an ancient painting by Zhang Zeduan, a painter from the northern Song Dynasty. His paintings depicted the landscape, atmosphere and how people celebrated Festival of Pure Brightnes in the Song Dynasty. Soak up the atmosphere as you watch authentic Song Dynasty performances.

For dinner, feast on the local cuisine and experience the delicacies of the region.

Day 2 - The Shaolin Temple, Martial arts performance and Longmen Grottoes
Discover the Shaolin Temple which was first built in the Northern Wei Dynasty. It is said that “Shaolin Kungfu is famous for the temple, whilst the temple is famous for its Kungfu”.

The Shaolin Temple, known by some as the Number One Temple Under Heaven, attracts Kungfu practitioners from all over the world. Be amazed at the tranquility and beauty as you explore the temple and it’s surrounding features including the Forest of Pagodas and Budhidharma’s Cave.

Watch a martial arts demonstration performed by monks and see with your own eyes their amazing agility and mastery of skills.

After indulging in the local delights at lunch, travel to Luoyang to see the Longmen Grottoes, a world cultural heritage site. Carving of these magnificent sculptures seen at the Grottoes began during the 18th year of Emperor Xiaowen of the Wei Dynasty’s reign and continued for the next 400 years. See the awesome results of all that carving in the 2600 caves, 100,000 statues and 3200 stone tablet carvings.

Following all this, head back to the hotel to prepare for the journey back to Beijing.
