Canning College & Tuart College

Canning College and Tuart College provide Australian and international students over the age of 16 the opportunity to study together in a quality educational environment. These two government colleges are recognised internationally for the high standard of support and education provided to students. Since 1982 over 4000 international students have graduated from the Colleges and been accepted into many Australian and international universities.

The Colleges
Tuart and Canning are co-educational government colleges that have provided pre-university studies for local and international students since 1982. Both are in Perth with Tuart College situated seven kilometres north, and Canning College eight kilometres south, of the city centre. The Colleges are both located approximately 10-15 minutes drive from central Perth.

Each College has an enrolment of approximately 1500 with up to 350 being international students. Over 4,500 international students have graduated from the Colleges and gained places in universities throughout Australia and in Singapore, Malaysia, the USA, Canada, New Zealand and the UK.

The facilities and range of subjects offered by each College are similar. The results achieved by each College have been consistently high over a long period of time. The decision on which College to attend is left to the student and his/her parents. Some students select a College because they have family living nearby or they have friends at that College.

Your success is our priority
Tuart College and Canning College are devoted to helping students achieve their goals in education and beyond. The academic staff are highly qualified and have many years of experience teaching in their specialist areas. Students' attendance and performance are closely monitored by class teachers and the International Office staff.

Studying with Australian students on the university-style campuses is a real advantage and helps prepare international students for university.

The Colleges believe that all students benefit from small class sizes, so that academic staff can provide more individual attention and support. Class sizes are restricted to a maximum of 25, except in special English classes, where the maximum class size is 18.

Teaching styles focus on student-centred learning and aim to develop students who are independent learners ready for tertiary level education. Teachers assist students complete these studies by providing:

  • class instruction, notes and individual assistance on the course content
  • exercises and research assignments for students to complete independently
  • assistance with study techniques
  • ideas on how to best use the recommended textbooks
  • the opportunity for students to ask questions and discuss issues related to the course
Some subjects, including the sciences, computing and visual arts, have a significant practical component. The Colleges have the facilities and resources to guarantee that all students can participate fully in these activities.

Added services and facilities that help students achieve success include:

  • a wide range of support services
  • well-stocked libraries and access to the internet

Canning College
Canning College is a government institution specialising in education for local and international students over the age of 16 years. The College has been in operation since 1982 and offers a wide range of tertiary entrance, vocational and general interest courses.

Features:

  • Courses to meet a diversity of needs
  • Experienced, qualified lecturers for all courses
  • Latest technology in the content and delivery of courses
  • Support services for all students
Courses
Both colleges offer a range of programs designed to meet the special needs of students from various countries. Some students will have the academic background and English language skills to enrol in a university entry program, either the Tertiary entrance Examination (TEE) or Foundation program.

Students who have not completed the equivalent of the Western Australian year 11 level, or whose English skills need upgrading, will first need to do the bridging or year 11 preparatory courses

The Universities
The Colleges, which are government institutions, have a close association with the four Western Australian government universities and large numbers of local and international students from the Colleges have entered these universities after completing the Foundation or TEE Programs. Students studying the WAUFP have guaranteed entry into these universities on successful completion of their course.

The four government-funded universities of Western Australia have well-established reputations for academic excellence, providing quality education and professional support services for their students over a wide range of courses. Degrees from the Western Australian universities are recognised internationally.

Direct Entry Universities:

  • Edith Cowan University
  • Curtin University of Technology
  • Murdoch University
  • The University of Western Australia
The final scores for all subjects are based on 50% from continuous College assessments and 50% from external examinations.

WAUFP (Foundation Program)
To gain admission to university from the WAUFP a student needs to achieve:
1. a score of at least 50% in ELACS and
2. a Combined Percentage Score (CPS) in three selected academic subjects that meet the requirement for entry to the particular course of study at university. If a student elects to study four subjects, the three highest scoring subjects will be used to calculate the average.
Final subject scores are normally available within one month of completing the WAUFP. At that time the universities will make formal offers of places to successful students.

TEE (Tertiary Entrance Examination)
Arrangements for students undertaking the TEE program are slightly different. The requirements are similar in that students must gain 50% in English or English Literature or approximately 58% in ESL to meet the literacy requirement for university entrance. Students then need to attain similar average scores to the WAUFP in the 3, 4 or 5 other academic subjects they have selected to study.

Perth, Western Australia
Perth, a capital city of 1.5 million, is well known for its friendly and relaxed lifestyle, and is an ideal destination for international students. Built around the shores of the Swan River, the city is one of the most scenic in the world with an abundance of parks and gardens and a coastline of clean, white beaches.

Perth's Mediterranean climate of cool winters and warm, dry summers ensures a pleasant environment in which to study and live. The lifestyle is well supported by excellent health care facilities and a clean, safe environment free from the congestion of many other cities. Many Western Australians are migrants or the children of migrants. This rich cultural variety is reflected in the diversity of the city's restaurants, its festivals and exhibitions, sporting and recreational opportunities and the places of worship for all major religions. Perth has an excellent tertiary education system which includes four public universities, one private university, a number of vocational colleges and private business colleges. Over 19,000 international students make Perth their home each year.

Accommodation
Accommodation is an important aspect of student life in Perth, and the Colleges aim to ensure that all students are comfortably and safely housed so they can focus on their studies.

An accommodation officer is available at each College to provide a comprehensive and efficient accommodation service for international students. This includes:

  • inspecting prospective accommodation
  • accompanying students on visits to view accommodation
  • ensuring that accommodation is easily accessible to the Colleges
  • providing information on a variety of types and prices of accommodation
  • placing each student in permanent accommodation during the orientation week
  • advising on all aspects of accommodation in Perth

DIRECT ENTRY PROGRAMS

Students who successfully complete the English for Academic Purposes program, and who meet the academic entry requirements, are able to gain direct entry into the course of their choice without taking the IELTS or TOEFL test.
