THE ACADEMY
The Academy of English Language in London is a leading institution which specialises in teaching English to foreigners. The Academy is located in a quiet area of Covent Garden in central London.

The Academy is accredited by the British council and is a member of EnglishUK.The Academy is equipped with the very best in language learning facilities: bright, spacious classrooms, a library, computers offering free e-mail and internet access, and a cafeteria where home made meals are available.


AIM
The English Language programs in London are designed to immerse participants in the English Language. Participants gain valuable information about British culture and society while improving their overall communication skills. For further immersion in the language, culture, and society, a wide range of social and cultural activities is held at no additional cost within the Total Program. The programs are designed to provide participants with ample opportunity to learn and use English and be a part of a comprehensive learning experience. The overall aim of the program is to instil the linguistic, practical, and cultural aspects of the English language as well as the British way of life.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAMS
A variety of English Language Programs are offered to provide a range of intensities, academic needs and durations. Levels from Beginner to Proficient are available (see 'Placement Test & Proficiency Levels' below). Classes are held from Monday to Friday. Each class is 45 minutes long.

GENERAL ENGLISH
Levels: Beginner to Proficient
Duration: Min. 1 week
Classes: 20 lessons per week
Start dates: Every Monday

The General English Program integrates the four language skills; reading, writing, speaking, and listening. In addition, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation are emphasized to enable students to attain communicative proficiency. The curriculum is based on the needs of each proficiency level (see below for description) and is designed to allow participants to progress rapidly and achieve language fluency. Emphasis is placed on developing participants' oral expression, listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing, and grammatical skills. Modern and interactive teaching methods focus on instilling linguistic, practical, communicative, and cultural aspects of the language.

Sample Timetable:
Classes are held from Monday to Friday which alternate on a daily basis. Students taking 20 lessons per week attend either 09:00 - 10:30, 10:45 - 12:15 or 14:45-15:45, 16:00 - 17:30. Students taking an intensive course of 30 lessons also have lessons between 12:30 - 14:00 each day. Schedule is provided on site.

INTENSIVE ENGLISH
Levels: Beginner to Proficient
Duration: Min. 1 week
Classes: 30 lessons per week
Start dates: Every Monday

The Intensive English Program consists of 30 lessons per week, held in the mornings and afternoons. Morning classes (General English Program) integrates the four language skills; reading, writing, speaking, and listening. In addition, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation are emphasized to enable students to attain communicative proficiency. Afternoon classes will focus on increasing your ability to communicate, comprehend and to use the four language skills with greater fluency, accuracy, and confidence.

CAMBRIDGE EXAM PREPARATION
Levels: Intermediate to Proficient
Duration: 13 weeks
Classes: 20 or 30 lessons per week

The Cambridge Exam Preparation program is a preparation program for the internationally recognised Cambridge examinations. The following levels are offered:

PET (Preliminary English Test) is an intermediate level exam, testing your ability to cope with everyday written and spoken communications.

FCE (First Certificate) tests students at upper-intermediate level of English. The exam covers writing, reading, grammar, listening and speaking. The program will prepare you for all these different parts of the exam.

CAE (Advanced) tests students at advanced level. It is a practical course relating to the world of work rather than academic purposes. To gain entry to the program you should have achieved a level of English equivalent to Grade C or above at First Certificate level (TOEFL level at least 500 points). The exam covers writing, reading, grammar, listening and speaking, and the program will prepare you for all these different parts of the exam. As in any exam the final outcome depends on students motivation throughout the course.

CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) is a very advanced level exam - perfect if you have achieved a high level of language skills and are able to function effectively in almost any English-speaking context.

The Cambridge Exams are recognised by employers and professional bodies, universities, and colleges all over the world. Based on the language level standards of elementary, intermediate, upper intermediate, advanced and proficiency, these internationally recognised examinations are the best examinations for testing all aspects of your English language ability at the standard you need.

IELTS EXAM PREPARATION
Levels: Pre-Intermediate to Proficient
Duration: Min. 8 weeks
Classes: 20 or 30 lessons per week
Start dates: 7 Jan, 18 Feb, 31 Mar, 12 May, 23 Jun, 4 Aug, 15 Sep, 27 Oct

The IELTS Exam Preparation Program consists of 20 or 30 lessons per week. The IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) Exam program is designed for students who wish to study at an English-speaking university. It is internationally recognised by English-speaking colleges and universities and other organisations requiring a very high standard of English language ability. At the Academy the IELTS preparation course runs throughout the year and prepares students for all aspects of the IELTS test.

The IELTS test consists of four modules: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

PLACEMENT TEST & PROFICIENCY LEVELS


First, participants are placed according to the proficiency level they indicate on the application form. At the start of the program, all students complete a placement test and are placed in the appropriate class according to their level of English.

BEGINNER
This level is for those who have never learned English or who have learned a few words but cannot express themselves in complete sentences, and have no grammatical knowledge.

ELEMENTARY
This level is for those who have learnt basic vocabulary and can express themselves in simple sentences on common topics. Classwork includes everyday topics and participants are encouraged to converse and express themselves using basic sentence structures.

PRE-INTERMEDIATE
This level is for those who have a grasp of simple sentence structures, and have learnt basic grammar systematically. Classes focus on improving participants' vocabulary, sentence structures, listening, reading, and speaking skills. Phonetics exercises and drills ensure that participants learn the correct pronunciation and intonation.

INTERMEDIATE
This level is for those who are able to converse on general topics and express themselves using more complex sentence structures in English. Participants learn to communicate in various situations with clarity and confidence, including describing personal experiences.

UPPER-INTERMEDIATE
This level is for those who are able to converse on various topics and express themselves using complex sentence structures. Classes build on increasing the level of grammar and vocabulary, enabling participants to express themselves functionally in different contexts. Emphasis is placed on participants' grammar, syntax, writing, oral expression, and listening comprehension skills.

ADVANCED
This level is for those who can discuss specific topics, raise complex questions, and express their opinions clearly using correct pronunciation. Participants can express themselves systematically using appropriate expressions and language norms.

PROFICIENT
This level is for those who have a full command of the language with consistent accuracy, fluency, appropriate usage and comprehension. The curriculum is focused on enabling participants to express themselves proficiently at an abstract level.


GUIDED EXCURSIONS AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES


To ensure a comprehensive learning experience, excursions and activities are provided as part of the Total Program. Excursions and cultural activities are an important component of learning, and provide participants with a deeper understanding of the British lifestyle, history, and culture. A wide range of excursions to major attractions, museums, historic sites and galleries are available. Activities and Excursions vary depending on program intake. Excursions, social and cultural activities are held in the afternoons, evenings, or weekends and may include the following: Welcome Dinner, Pub Night, Museum of London, The Tate Modern Gallery, St. Katherine's Dock, trips to Oxford, Cambridge and Brighton and more.

TEACHERS & TEACHING MATERIALS
All teachers have a recognised qualification to teach English as a foreign language and most teachers have a university degree. The team of teacher’s is kept up to date with the latest ideas in teaching.

Up-to-date, carefully selected materials are used in class, giving participants valuable information on modern-day British culture and society while developing language and communication skills.


ASSESSMENT
Participants' progress is assessed through continuous homework assignments and tests throughout the programs. At the successful completion of the program, a certificate is awarded certifying the type of program and recognises your achievement.


ACCOMMODATION
To cater for the varying needs of the participants enrolled in the program, a range of accommodation options is offered: Host Family, Residence, and Student House.

The school will be closed on the following Public Holidays:

No refund is made for classes scheduled to take place on these days.


VISA


Applicants from some countries are required to obtain a Visa from their local British Embassy, Consulate prior to travelling.

If a student visa is needed, WLE provides participants with the visa support documents required by the British Consulate.

These documents will be provided as soon as the total program fees are paid and enrolment is completed.

REQUIREMENTS
WLE’s English Language Programs in London are offered to participants from all over the world, who are at least 16 years old (students aged 16-17 must book Host Family, Single Room). For exceptions please contact WLE.

For peace of mind, Total Program fees include Emergency Travel and Medical Insurance. StudentCare Insurance covers emergency medical and dental treatment, pro-rata return of program fee in case of curtailment, personal liability, and more. Participants are insured for the duration of the program.

Free pickup from the airport* to your accommodation is provided in the total program (*Airports: Heathrow, City, Stansted, Luton). The following important details are required at least 10 days before your arrival:

An emergency number is provided in the Welcome Pack for any last minute arrival delays. Participants are met at the airport and transported to their accommodation.
