Learn Taekwondo in Korea, the land of its origins. As one of the most popular forms of martial arts, Taekwondo has not only proven itself as an Olympic sport but has a following of more than 50 million students and trainers in over 167 countries. To provide a comprehensive curriculum, total programs combine Taekwondo Training with cultural workshops and exchange with native Korean students.
This unique program is designed to immerse participants in Korea’s traditional martial art, Taekwondo. Practicing martial arts develops participants' physical and mental fitness, improves self-esteem, self-control, mental agility and mental concentration. In addition, training improves general fitness, flexibility, coordination, balance, strength, and self-defense skills. Martial Arts training focuses on: stance training for balance, strength, stamina and flexibility; repetition of movements for control and speed; and series of movements for coordination and overall fitness.
Participants also have the option to combine their Taekwondo training with Korean language study. The language immersion program integrates all aspects of the language: reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, phonetics, and vocabulary. Accelerated teaching methods allow participants at lower proficiency levels to acquire the language skills needed for effective communication in a short period of time, and advanced students to gain expression proficiency at an abstract level. Topics studied include everyday situations as well as Korean culture, society, and history.

This immersion program consists of three main components: 1) Taekwondo training, 2) Exchange partners program, and 3) Korean culture workshops.
1) Taekwondo Training
Participants learn Taekwondo, a traditional Korean form of martial arts. Train with Korean Martial Arts masters, with years of experience training students of all levels. Taekwondo's physical skills and mental power are developed through practice of Poom-sae (forms), Kyo-ru-gi (sparring) and Kyuck-pa (breaking). Taekwondo lessons are held five times a week at the Taekwondo Institute in Seoul.
Taekwondo emphasizes attack and defense skills without a weapon. Training promotes discipline of the mind, body, and soul as well as the development of self defense skills while encouraging the spirit of courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and a determined spirit. It is considered as one of the proudest cultural heritages of the Korean people.
2) Exchange Partners Program
Getting to know locals is an integral part of the program. It provides cultural interaction between participants and Korean students, marking the beginning of many lasting friendships. Participants schedule to meet with one another at their convenience.
3) Korean Culture Workshops
Designed to provide further immersion in the language and culture of Korea, a comprehensive curriculum of workshops is offered. These workshops encourage active participation, which provides the opportunity to learn different aspects of Korean culture. Examples of workshops include calligraphy, cooking, Hanbok wearing, and traditional dance performances.
Participants train under the guidance of Seoul's prominent Martial Arts masters. These highly experienced masters are dedicated to providing high quality training for all students, from beginners to participants competing in national competitions.
This unique program aims to immerse participants in the Korean culture and way of life by combining training, exchange partners program and workshops with the following free additional Total Program features.
Activities with Native Korean Students
Free social, cultural and sports activities with Korean students are held throughout the program to encourage cultural exchange. The calendar of activities varies and may include cooking, bowling, swimming, and festival celebrations.
Guided Tours
Guided tours are held on weekday afternoons and weekends to allow students to discover the city's major historical and cultural attractions, including the Palaces, Folk Village, and night markets. Visits may include watching a traditional dance performance or Gayagum recital; and trips to entertainment centers such as Lotte World, Seoul Land, Everland, and Wolmido are also organized. Places visited vary according to the program intake.
Social Activities
A wide range of activities are organized throughout the program including bowling, singing, hiking, and farewell evening.
The Korean Language and Taekwondo Program is designed for students wishing to combine their martial arts training with Korean language classes. Depending on the program duration, core language classes are held at two locations:
- The Academy of Korean Language & Culture
For short term programs (4 to 12 weeks) Core Language Classes are held at Seoul’s leading language institution, the Academy of Korean Language & Culture. The Academy was established specifically to teach Korean to international students and foreigners who live in Korea. The Academy has been selected because of its emphasis on accelerated learning with small classes and its outstanding language curriculum. This Academy is regarded as the optimal learning environment with excellent teaching methods and the latest teaching materials.
- Yonsei University
For long term programs (1 term to an Academic Year) Core Language Classes are held at Yonsei University. With a long history of teaching Korean, this option is popular with participants who wish to study in a university atmosphere, with campus facilities. The campus provides various facilities to meet the needs of students including a fully equipped multi-media center, student lounge and library.
In both institutions, core language classes integrate all aspects of Korean including reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, phonetics and vocabulary. Class work focuses on developing oral expression, listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing, and grammar. Listening and speaking skills are particularly emphasized to enable participants to attain communicative proficiency. Up-to-date materials are used to introduce modern day Korea, its social and economic life, culture, history, and literature.
There are 6 main proficiency levels. First, participants are placed according to the proficiency level they indicate on the application form. At the start of the program non-beginners take a written and oral placement test. Second placements are made according to the results of the placement test.
Level 1: Total Beginner
Level 2: Elementary
Level 3: Intermediate
Level 4: High Intermediate
Level 5: Advanced

Total Beginner
This level is for participants who have never learned Korean or who have learned a few words but cannot express themselves in complete sentences. Classes focus on introducing basic vocabulary, grammar, sentence structures, and simple texts. Phonetics exercises and drills ensure that participants learn correct pronunciation and intonation.
Elementary
This level is for those who have learned a few words but cannot express themselves in complete sentences. Classes focus on building participants' vocabulary, grammar and sentence structures. Classwork includes everyday topics and participants are encouraged to converse and express themselves using basic sentence structures.
Intermediate
This level is for those who have learned Korean, have a grasp of simple sentence structures, and have learned basic grammar systematically. Classes focus on improving participants' vocabulary, sentence structures, listening, reading, and speaking skills. Written exercises include composing simple letters, short essays and reports. Phonetics exercises and drills ensure that participants learn the correct pronunciation and intonation.
High Intermediate
This level is for those who are able to converse on general topics and express themselves using sentence structures in Korean. Classes build on increasing the level of grammar and vocabulary, enabling participants to express themselves functionally in different contexts. Classwork focuses on current events, civilization, and literature to build vocabulary while at the same time developing a greater awareness of Korean culture and society. Emphasis is placed on participants' grammar, syntax, writing, oral expression, and listening comprehension skills. Oral expression classes include discussions of current events. Exercises to improve writing, speaking, and grammar skills include writing reports, letters, narratives, and essays. Phonetics exercises and drills ensure that participants quickly master correct pronunciation.
Advanced
This level is for those who can discuss general topics, raise complex questions, and express their opinions clearly using correct pronunciation. Participants can express themselves systematically using appropriate expressions and language norms. The curriculum is focused on enabling participants to express themselves proficiently at an abstract level. To improve fluency, classwork includes advanced writing and oral expression styles and techniques, such as commentaries, speeches and debates.
High Advanced
This level is for those who posses a high command of the Korean language and are able to converse fluently and effectively using appropriate expressions and language norms. The curriculum is focused on enabling participants to master the language and express themselves in a proficient manner at an abstract level. Classwork focuses on perfecting oral expression and writing skills and developing a global perspective of Korean culture in relation to participants' particular field of interest.
Participants’ progress in the Korean language is assessed by continuous homework assignments and tests throughout the program. Attendance is mandatory. Participants are awarded official transcripts at the end of the program.
Students successfully completing their Taekwondo training will receive a certificate awarded at a ceremony on the last day of the program.
A range of housing options are offered and included in the Total Program Fees. Special attention is given to the accommodation offered to our students. Accommodations are inspected and visited by on site staff and have been selected on the basis of cleanliness, location, safety and facilities. Early application and enrollment is highly recommended.
Accommodation starts the day before the first day of program, and ends at 12pm the day after the last day of the program. Extra nights are available for an additional fee and subject to availability. For participants’ privacy and comfort, all rooms are individual rooms.

Participants enrolled in the Total Program are greeted at the airport and accompanied to their chosen accommodation. The following important details are required at least 10 days before your arrival: Arrival date, Arrival time, Arrival place, Bus/Train/Flight Number, Airline/Bus Company, Place of departure.
An emergency number is provided in the Welcome Pack for any last minutes arrival delays.

For peace of mind, Total Program fees include Emergency Travel and Medical Insurance. StudentCare Insurance covers emergency medical and dental treatment, pro-rata return of program fee in case of curtailment, personal liability, and more. Participants are insured for the duration of the program.

Participants from Australia, Japan and some countries in the European Union studying for less than 90 days do not need a visa to enter Korea. Citizens of the USA do not require a visa to enter Korea for up to 30 days. Canadians do not require a visa for durations up to 6 months.

Participants from all other countries must obtain a General Short-Term (C-3) visa.
Student studying 3 months or longer may require a Student (D-4) Visa. It is highly recommended that Application and Enrollment be made at least 2 months before the start of the program. After enrollment is completed, long term students are provided with a Letter of Invitation and an Admission Notice. These documents are required when applying for a study visa to enter Korea.
Note that the provision of visa support documents is subject to Korean Consulate and Embassy requirements.
